"Max Lakeman and the beautiful Stranger" is charming, thoughtful, and very descriptive. The realistic medical details in some of the scenes are a testimony to the author's time as an ICU nurse. But most of all the book is a celebration of family, of marriage, and of the power of forgiveness. I love how the author adds a sense of magic and mystery to down-to-earth reality.Max Lakeman is a likeable protagonist in spite of his transgressions, as human in his failings as in his efforts to do right. He dearly loves his wonderful wife and his children, and he enjoys the straight forward job of cutting grass. Still, he is different. At times he lives in a another world, where his imagination gets too much of a hold on him, and that's when his normal world finds itself in danger of crumbling. We are glued to his story, I could not put it down! Highly recommendable!

A breezy, delightful, hypnotic summer read. I had to read this after reading The Man in the Window and wasn't disappointed. If you're not familiar with the writer, Jon Cohen, you are in for a real treat.
I bought this book when it first came out and remember just loving it. Seeing it again makes me want to reread it, and reading the sample of his other book makes me think I won't be wasting my time. And that I'll love it just as much now as I did then.
What a pity this book is not easily available!
It is a really whacky yet winsome blend of the unbelievable and the mundane - Max Lakeman mows lawns for a living, and loves it; but he is also a dreamer. When his innocent day-dreams manifest in the shape of a beautiful woman in the rhododendron bushes, the world of tomato ketchup and kids seems more like the dream ...
What is arresting about this book is the skill with which the writer has created a very richly textured microcosm of reality brinking on unreality, and peopled it with characters so real they seem mythic, and situations so normal they seem bizarre.
The story was slow to start and slow to end. There were pieces of the writing that kept me reading but I was waiting for it to get really good and it never quite got there. I was hoping for a better read.
I was introduced to Jon Cohen through The Man in the Window, a Nancy Pearl Book Lust Rediscovery book. That was such a glorious reading experience that I went in search of more by the author, and found Max Lakeman and the Beautiful Stranger. It, too, was a luminous story. Wikipedia tells me Cohen wrote one more novel, Dentist Man -- now I need to hunt that down.
Jon Cohen has a quirky, fun sense of humor. This is a good light read when you want a pleasant diversion with characters that remind one of a 50's family show. There is enough fantasy to prevent the reader from taking the plot too seriously and to be just plain fun. It is a quick read, has a good feel ending--perfect for a plane ride or to read on the beach.
Thoroughly enjoyed the twisted story of Max and Nelly and the turns which keep them together. Life is complicated, but in the end they figure out by loving each other, the simple things are what matter. Loved it.
