Riley Taylor, a girl living in 2095, underwater Brooklyn, is leaving her abusive home and hoping that a spot in the military will provide enough cash to last her several years on her own. The service is always looking for new recruits to fight the many wars the United States is involved in. Trouble is, only 20% of those who enter the service will survive the three year term and collect the handsome stipend waiting for them at the end. She's willing to take the chance, but once she gets in, she finds that all the normal rules of society don’t apply. With no escape, she has no choice but to hang on and fight for her life.

Pink is a serial read, which means that several shorter segments will be released about once a month. This is a clean read for ages 13+, but it deals with some heavy issues too mature for the crowd below 13.

Pink Episode 1 eBook J B Cantwell

This is a great start to a promising serial, and follows Riley's first day as she applies for the military in a dystopian future existence. Ms. Cantwell does a great job at getting into the mind of our young recruit. Riley is not perfect, and she does not do well in all areas, but it makes her more human as a character, and I really like her so far. This is quite different than her fabulous Aster Wood books, but it's still very well done, and I'm looking forward to the rest.

Pink Episode 1 eBook J B Cantwell Reviews

How frustrating! I am totally into the book and it ends way too soon. I need the next installment NOW!

It is the future and life isn't good for much of anybody. Being rich is rare. Being in the military lands most people dead. You are given an implant at a very young age that tells you what other people's names are and if they are a good person or a bad person and given news feed on it as well. Food is mostly a nutrition bar type of thing that seems kind of disgusting!

Riley's dad died in the military and her mom was a drunk and hit her. So when Riley is of age she decides to go into the military knowing her odds of surviving aren't good. But living with her alcoholic and abusive mother isn't good either.

The writing is amazing. I was sucked right into this world. I understood Riley's feelings. Her hair is pink because of a mistake when doing her hair. Now while at the sign up station, everyone who saw her before her hair was shaved off called her Pink.

The ending isn't exactly a cliffhanger but it is sort of a tease to leave it like that!

If you like short installments of a book, military, pink hair, running away from abuse, then you might like this book!
This is a fun introductory short, well the first in a series of six books, about a young girl choosing her life path. The setting – pure dystopian – 2095, where rations for nutra-bars are the mode of survival for the majority, common class. Yes, you still have the elite class. It takes cash to get anything good, and it isn’t cheap. Thus, enter the military where odds are not forever in your favor. You are guaranteed death benefits and big payouts. The downside, you’ll probably die quickly.

So, Episode 1 is a fast read (it is short). You are introduced to a few characters that, one assumes, will continue to play large rolls as the story continues. Cantwell paints the scenery quite well and the pace, along with Riley’s character, keeps things interesting. No more prisons - do or die in service - no more quality of life for the masses. Expect in-fighting and betrayal with future character development - that's my guess.

The only real question is – do you dive in or wait for a bundle sale?

Pink
By J. B. Cantwell
Genre Young Adult

Pink is set in 2095 when most of the world is underwater and most people live in a state of constant fear, poverty and starvation. The only way out for young people like “pink” (Riley Taylor) is to join the service. If she survives the 3-year enlistment, she's set for life. Only the odds are not in her favor. Only 20% of those who enter the service ever live to get out of it.

Have you ever read a book during which you got so caught up that when it ended you yelled “NOOOOO!”? I have. This one.

I did not realize when I purchased it that it was part of a series. In fact, it’s more of a serial. A new installment is released about once a month. I don’t think I would have started it had I realized that. HOWEVER, I’m hooked now!

The author, J. B. Cantwell is incredibly talented. Her writing style is fast-paced, yet not rushed. She paints an incredible picture of 2095 and the characters within her story without overwhelming the reader with flowery words that really have no purpose.

I very quickly found myself watching Riley’s story with great interest as if I were there, a part of it, riding on her shoulder. At one point, Riley finds herself in a fist-fight with another girl and my stomach LITERALLY tensed up as if I were the one about to be hit. No joke.

When I reached the end of this very short first episode, I really did mentally squeal “NOOO!” I ran over to to see if there was a sequel. That’s when I discovered it was part of a serial. I will be reading this through to the very end. I MUST know what happens next! Now I know how my grandmother felt all those years ago, listening to her radio serials. How will I make it to the next installment of PINK?!
Eh. Trite and forgettable.
Pink -- I thought this was really written well and enjoyed it. Gotta read the next one.
Not a bad read and I would have continued for a few hundred or so more pages. Very, very, interesting.
A well written story of a young girl that escapes an abusive home life to enter the service. The story tells of her escape and passage through the many channels to be approved by the service. Once her pink hair is shaved off her nickname Pink still remains.
